Four Tips For Moving Across Town

Posted on: 20 March 2018

If you've had friends move across the country or even a few hours away, you may be counting yourself lucky that you only have to move across town. While moving a short distance is, in many ways, easier than moving several hours away, it is still a challenging endeavor. Here are four tips to help ensue your across-town move goes well.

Rent a moving truck.

When you're only moving a short distance, you may assume you can just take trip after trip with your own car, but this method is more challenging than it may seem. There are bound to be items that don't fit in your car, and you don't want anything to spill in the car and ruin the upholstery. It's worth the money to rent a moving truck for the day, even though you only have to drive it a short distance. At least you won't pay a lot for gas!

Remember to actually change your address.

It's easy enough to head down the street and get your mail while you're still moving from place to place. When you do officially move, remember to actually change your mailing address; otherwise, your mail may end up in limbo if someone else moves into your old home and is not sure what to do about it. Changing your address should be easy since you will probably still be in the same mail district. Just stop by the local post office and let them know, or fill out the change of address form on the U.S. Postal Service website.

Don't ask too many people to help.

One of the great things about moving locally is that friends should be available both to help you pack and to help you unpack. However, there is such a thing as too many helpers. If you have too many people in the mix, you'll trip over each other and work inefficiently. Ask a few of your most dependable friends to help you move, and if others offer, ask if they can wait a few weeks and come help you clean or paint in the new home instead!

Wrap things well.

Just because you're only driving for a few minutes does not mean your fragile items won't become damaged. Wrap all of your mugs and glasses very well before packing them, even though they're not taking a cross-country adventure.
